Let’s dig into what to look for when buying a fluorocarbon fishing line.
Why do you want it?
The idea of a fluorocarbon line is typically used as a leader tied to your braid or monofilament mainline. The leader will be nearly invisible to fish, while also presenting the lure or bait in such a way as to draw more bites.
What makes fluorocarbon line so unique?
The monofilament line is more visible underwater than fluorocarbon. While it’s not invisible, it is extremely close. The high level of abrasion resistance helps as well. Imagine that you’re targeting a marlin. The abrasion resistance of a fluorocarbon leader can be the difference between landing it and losing it.
If you are fishing with a braided line, then consider fluorocarbon for the leader. It may cost more than a monofilament line but will give you a much higher success rate when on the water.
Lighter test fluorocarbon works well as a mainline, but if you are using anything above 10lb test, go with a different main and use the fluorocarbon as a leader. It’s stiffer, sinks faster, and will pull the slack out of your mainline quicker than using mono for a leader.
Why isn’t fluorocarbon used more widely?
Fluorocarbon fishing lines are used in a wide range of applications. However, there are times you’d want to avoid it. If you are going after toothy predators like pike, sharks, and mackerel, you may want to use a wire or cable to keep the fish from biting through the line.
In waters that are silty or dirty, mono may be a better option. Fluorocarbon loses its ability to be nearly invisible once it’s nicked. In muddy water, the dirt and sediment stick to the nicks, making the line stand out to whatever is under the water.
You might not want a sinking line when tossing topwater lures to hungry bass since you want to stay on the surface. Mono is a better choice.
Does using fluorocarbon leader matter?
Fluorocarbon leader works excellently in most situations. It’s denser, sinks faster, more abrasion resistant, and has a thinner diameter than mono. A good length of leader is between 3-5ft for smaller fish. Bigger fish are going to need 5 – 10ft. Tuna have fantastic eyesight and aren’t easily fooled by mono. A 10ft leader of fluorocarbon will do the trick.
What knots work best with fluorocarbon?
The best knots always depend on what you can tie. The best fluorocarbon line responds well to a Uni-knot tied to the main line and a Palomar knot for the hook. Learn those knots well, and you’ll lose far fewer lures.
